Maia is in her last year at North Springs High School, and a big part of her high school experience was the dance program. November holds Project Dance – November 8 & 9 – at North Springs High School. Maia will be performing in several pieces.

Project Dance was founded in 1998 to showcase student choreography of the remarkable and diverse talent at North Springs. It is the only choreography showcase exclusively for high school students in the metropolitan area and involves a unique range in dance styles. This year will feature modern dance with fusions of ballet, jazz, and lyrical styles along with talented hip hop dancers hitting the stage. Visit northspringsdance.com for tryouts and ticketing information or go directly to the box office here.

Project Dance had over 45 pieces auditioned last this fall. There was a lot of talent and hard work! Then came final auditions Oct 16 & 17th.

For over 16 years, the North Springs Dance Magnet Program has provided a unique opportunity for students at all levels of dance ability to participate in the study and practice of a variety of dance styles. Grounded in the rich traditions of modern, jazz, and ballet, the students are encouraged to explore choreography, improvisation and dance history while also being trained in each of these established dance techniques. Our students are encouraged to express their creative and artistic talent throughout the school year. Most notably, each fall the North Springs Dance Program sponsors Project Dance, a showcase of student choreography featuring students in the magnet program and other students who wish to try out for the production.

This year, the school has over 160 students participating in the North Springs Dance Magnet Program. The dancers range in skill levels from the beginner to the pre-professional. The company dancers participate in a variety of competitions throughout the year in prestigious Atlanta dance companies. This year (2013), company dancers Maia Charanis and Alexandra Mannings were chosen as finalists in The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program. GHP is a summer residential instructional program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. GHP is a highly competitive program with a  rigorous interview process, both Maia and Alexandra had a fantastic experience representing North Springs Dance in Valdosta last summer.
